Destruction of Failaka Island
Failaka is a small (24 sq km) island 20 km from the mainland. In 1990 its population was about 2,000. Being beautiful and historic, it was a tourist attraction. Iraqi troops forced all residents off the island, then looted and vandalized it, fortified the coast, and shelled homes and other buildings as target practice. (To view video, click here) |
