Destruction of Failaka Island Failaka is a small (24 sq km) island 20 km from the mainland. In 1990 its population was about 2,000. Being beautiful and historic, it was a tourist attraction. Iraqi troops forced all residents off the island, then looted and vandalized it, fortified the coast, and shelled homes and other buildings as target practice.
